We Don’t Want You to Have to Hire Us.

Our first and highest priority is protecting land and all the natural resources on it. We rarely make money doing this which is why some have called our “business model”, conservation-based environmental consulting, well not a business model at all. Unlike traditional environmental consulting, that tends to make more money the greater the number of impacts to the environment (yes, this is how it works), we talk people OUT of bad land use decisions=we want to talk ourselves OUT of work. We don’t want landowners to have to hire us/”consultants”–at all. When landowners listen, in addition to saving the land, the landowner inevitably saves money and time (permits, approvals, etc.) because now they don’t need a biological consultant at all–because they reduced their environmental impacts significantly, or maybe rethought the entire project.

A typical trip is meeting a landowner at a project site and advising them on what NOT to do, or even suggesting they abandon the project entirely. Why are you impacting that wetland? Do you understand the service it provides for you? It helps to recharge your well and filter out pollutants? Why can’t you use that existing roadbed? (In our business, sorry, the customer isn’t always right). We might suggest they consider other options–conservation easements, conservation programs, eco-tourism, or how about that location that has already been impacted, that empty lot? If we’re lucky, we at least get paid for our gas to and from.

But sometimes, the results are remarkable. Instead of another strip mall, the land is converted into a nature center, community organic farm that offers programs (including for kids!), we write an eco-tourism plan for a small farm, or it’s left alone entirely for conservation (ideally with an easement). We offer planning and assistance for these “development conversion” ideas, businesses. Imagination, friends. Imagination. Sometimes this is all it takes.

We also track impacts from public agencies/entities doing so-called “conservation” projects that in today’s Orwellian world, can mean logging, “brushing”, bulldozing, masticating, gutting, eviscerating healthy ecosystems, in the name of “public safety”. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of these projects. Volunteers are welcome to look at these sites with us, or help us in other ways. Get in touch.

By donating to EOS, understand we are NOT a non-profit, we are Ecopreneurs, you help us keep this direct conservation going, and we mean DIRECT. There is no board to dampen our goals or force us out of our real work to do endless fundraising (!). There is just us and you helping us out. One-time donations or on-going. It’s entirely up to you, and thank you. Empower Ecopreneurs and you empower communities.
